Using Internet via Satellite to link to remote offices "Up-Country" in Africa
How do you setup reliable communications in a remote office when you don't have stable power, and no telephone lines available? Jupiter systems faced many problems setting up two remote offices in the rural province cites of Gitega and Ruyigi to support USAID's humanitarian efforts in civil-war-torn Burundi. Using handheld satellite telephones, diesel power generators, and satellite transceivers for Internet and Telephone communications, we were able to link small four-computer networks to the main office in Bujumbura. This infrastructure allows our partner PADCO, to support USAID in setting up schools and providing vocational training to Burundi's young men. The program allows men currently fighting as rebel soldiers an incentive to put down their weapons and return home to make a peaceful living in this sometimes dangerous region.
"We just packed everything we needed on a small plane owned by the good people from the World Food Program because the roads were not safe when you have 8 brand-new HP computers, communication equipment, and you need to make sure everything gets there to make it all work." was how Mike Schank described his trip "up-country" to setup the networks in the two cities.
